The Lagos Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) moved another notch today as the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) commenced high-level discussions aimed at aligning stakeholders on the modernization of bus operations in Lagos through BRI.
At a strategic meeting held in Lagos, both parties focused on key operational and institutional reforms needed to successfully implement the initiative across Lagos’ Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs).
The discussions were facilitated by Mr. Olamide Afolabi, Managing Director of Touch and Pay Technologies.
Key areas discussed included:
* Vehicle Standards: Establishing rolling stock specifications for the introduction of a modern bus fleet.
* Institutional Structure: Organizing transport operators and union members into formal cooperatives or corporate entities.
* Maintenance Standards: Developing structured maintenance and servicing frameworks to guarantee long-term fleet efficiency and reliability                                                                                   .

The Bus Reform Initiative is designed to transform public transportation in Lagos by introducing:
* Modern Buses: Replacing ageing and unregulated vehicles with safer, higher-capacity fleets.
* Technology Integration: Deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to improve operations and monitoring.
* Digital Ticketing: Expansion of e-ticketing and cashless fare payment systems for commuters.
The meeting featured representatives from both government and transport unions.
Engr. Olasunkanmi Ojowuro and Mr. Tiamiyu Oluwatosin represented the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation while Dr. Kemi Amure (Head, Bus Services), Engr. Osa Konyeha (Technical Adviser, Planning), and Kolawole Ojelabi (Head, Corporate Communication) represented LAMATA.
Comrade Lasisi Ahmed Taiwo, State Deputy Chairman for Logistics and Planning, led the RTEAN team.
The engagement signals continued collaboration between regulators and transport operators as Lagos pushes toward a more structured, technology-driven, and commuter-focused public transport system.
Negotiations are scheduled to reconvene next week to finalize a formal agreement to drive the progress of Lagos State’s transportation landscape.
