The modernization of Lagos State’s public transport system gained further momentum today as the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) held a high-level strategic engagement with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on the operationalization of the Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) project, currently nearing completion.
The QBC is a major component of the Bus Reform Initiative.
The NURTW delegation to the talk was led by Comrade Segun Opoola, Branch Chairman (Ajah), while the LAMATA team included Dr. Kemi Amure, Head of Bus Services, and Engr. Osa Konyeha, Technical Adviser on Planning. The Ministry of Transportation was represented by Mr. Tiamiyu Oluwatosin, while the session was facilitated by Mr. Olamide Afolabi, Managing Director of Touch and Pay Technologies.
The engagement focused on aligning key stakeholders on the operational transition required for communities that will be served by the ongoing QBC project.
As the QBC infrastructure approaches completion, the dialogue is considered critical to ensuring a smooth transition from informal and unregulated transit operations to a structured, technology-driven transport ecosystem that benefits both operators and commuters.

Discussions centered around the core pillars of the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), particularly as they relate to affected communities across the state. Key focus areas included:
* Institutional Transition: Strategies for organizing local transport operators into formal cooperatives or corporate entities to enable their integration into the new structured transport framework.
* Fleet Standardization: Establishing rolling stock requirements for the deployment of modern, high-capacity buses tailored for QBC operations.
* Operational Excellence: Developing maintenance frameworks and service standards aimed at ensuring long-term fleet efficiency, reliability, and passenger safety.
* Digital Transformation: Integrating the Cowry Card e-ticketing platform and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to modernize fare collection, fleet monitoring, and operational management across the corridors.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment by government and transport stakeholders to transform Lagos’ transport landscape into a more reliable, efficient, and commuter-focused system that directly benefits communities along the new corridors.
Further discussions are scheduled to reconvene next week to finalize a formal agreement that will support the successful rollout of the Bus Reform Initiative across Lagos State.
