The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line project would create thousands of jobs, improve mobility and regenerate communities along the 31-kilometre long corridor from Agbado (Ogun State) to Marina (Lagos State).
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, stated this after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ogun State Government on the construction of a train station and depot yard at Agbodo for the rail project. The first phase of the Red Line is a 25-kilometre stretch from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos.
Secretary to the Government of Ogun State, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi signed on behalf of his state government.
Dr. Oladeinde explained that “what the Red Line will do is to facilitate movement for people that live in Ogun State and work in Lagos State and vice versa. The MoU is important because we have a station that we are building in Ogun State; the depot will also be in Ogun State and this will benefit both states in terms of employment creation, moving thousands of people between both states.
“It’s a huge investment and with that it also brings all form of regeneration, employment and people wanting to invest around the rail corridor. I think it is an exciting time for Lagos State as well as Ogun States. It is the beginning of many things to happen. Apart the Red line, there is another rail infrastructure – the Yellow line which will go to Ota and other BRT infrastructure. All both states are doing is just to ensure people travel efficiently within Ogun and Lagos State.” The Commissioner said

He assured that the infrastructure for the Red Line will be completed by the end of 2022 while passenger operation will commence in the first quarter of 2023
His counterpart in Ogun State, Engr. Gbenga Dairo said the signing of the MoU was the culmination of joint planning by both states in the area of transportation in the interest of their citizens.
“We are delighted that the Lagos State Government has taken the initiative to begin to invest significantly in infrastructure for rail transportation, which is really the transport mode that can cater for the thousands of people that are moving from both states. Ogun state is going to take advantage of this opportunity to extend services to Ijoko and Kajola,” Engr. Dairo stated.
During the signing ceremony, the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi said the MoU represented a significant milestone in the implementation of the Lagos Ogun Joint Development Commission, which both states subscribed.
He described both states as Siamese twins saying that the boundaries between the states are so intertwined and stressed the need for projects such as the Red line that would benefit the people immensely.
