The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) expresses deep sorrow and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Miss Elizabeth Fresh, whose life was tragically lost after being knocked down by a bus operated by one of the Bus Operating Companies (BOCs) under the Authority’s regulation. The incident occurred on Friday, 9 January 2026, around the Airport Junction, Ikeja.

Initial reports indicated that the accident occurred on the BRT lane, but there was no confirmation on which type of vehicle impacted the deceased. However, subsequent eyewitness accounts confirmed that Miss Fresh was struck by a high-capacity bus, which we later confirmed was operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company. The driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident.

LAMATA immediately contacted the family to express their sincere sympathies and solidarity. The family demanded that the driver be apprehended and prosecuted. LAMATA assured the family that it was working closely with the concerned operator to ensure the identification, apprehension, and handover of the driver to the Police for appropriate legal action.

Following a formal directive by the Authority, the Bus Operating Company presented the driver on Monday, 12 January 2026. The driver was subsequently handed over the same day to the Police at the domestic wing police station of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of the company’s manager.

LAMATA, as a responsible agency of the Lagos State Government, is deeply saddened by the loss of any life and remains committed to upholding safety and accountability across all regulated transport services. The Authority stated that the Government had provided transport infrastructure to promote safe commuting, but the citizens are not using this infrastructure fully. LAMATA once again urges all pedestrians to make use of pedestrian bridges provided by the government when crossing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors, in the interest of public safety.
