Road Network Efficiency Improvement
As part of its responsibilities, LAMATA has continued to improve on the quality of roads specified under the Declared Road Network (DRN) which is under its supervision. Since the commencement of Lagos Urban Transport Project (LUTP 1) in 2005, substantial IDA funds have been invested in this component due to the deplorable state of roads that existed before LUTP interventions on the 632 km DRN, identified as main bus public transport routes.
Maintaining, upgrading and rehabilitating the strategic road network is vital for proper planning and development of other sub-sector modes (Bus, BRT, Rail, Ferry, Traffic Management System, Non-Motorised Transport), within an effective integrated multimode public transport system. There were basically 4 types of road maintenance interventions implemented under this component. These are routine, recurrent, periodic and rehabilitation.
# | Classification of Maintenance | Details of works |
---|---|---|
1 | Routine | Works involve drainage clearing to reduce flooding, road sweeping and cleaning, vegetation trimming and haulage of disposable materials. |
2 | Recurrent | Works involve filling or sealing of cracks, repair of potholes, treatment of swellings, depressions, etc. on the roads. |
3 | Periodic | Works involve application of asphalt overlays, reconstruction of walkways, road markings, and installation of concrete lined drains to control flooding. They also involve some minor Traffic System Measures such as signage and traffic light installation at some junctions |
4 | Rehabilitation | The rehabilitation works involve reconstruction of pavements and application of an overlay of 50-millimeter thick hot rolled asphalt wearing course. It also involves the reconstruction of drainage systems, kerbs, and pedestrian walkways. |
Routine & Recurrent Maintenance
405 routine maintenance contracts were awarded and implemented on the entire DRN throughout the project cycle. Under recurrent maintenance, 104 contracts were awarded and implemented on 275km of roads during the same period.
