POLICY THRUST
LAMATA was set up as a semi autonomous agency to ensure the
highest level of service in public transportation in the lagos
metropolis. It was established with the World Bank’s
collaboration in the form of technical advice and direct
financial assistance to the tune of $100 million credit and
mandatory lagos state counterpart contribution of $35 million
LAMATA’s long-term goal is to make rapid, affordable, efficient
and effective public transportation accessible to all and sundry
in metropolitan lagos.
LAMATA is poised to formulate and implement policies and
strategies, plan, coordinate, and manage activities and
programmes, that will produce and sustain a holistic, efficient
and effective public transportation system that supports poverty
reduction, provides economic opportunities and promotes viable
communities in metropolitan lagos. LAMATA will carry out this
task to the best international standards
Objectives
The following are the broad objectives for which LAMATA was set
up:

To formulate and
implement programmes and policies for the overall improvement
of public transportation systems

To provide the
enabling environment for orderly and structured development of
the mass transit system, among others.

To carry out the
comprehensive maintenance of roads and related infrastructure,
inventory of road and transport network, continuous evaluation
of road network status.

To put in place
strategies to ensure overall improvement in traffic flow and
planned and programmed traffic engineering and management
works.

To ensure optimal
utilisation of intermodal means of transportation including
road, waterways, rail and non-motorised transport.

As a by-product of
the above, the agency will assist in poverty alleviation by
increasing economic efficiency through lower transport costs
and prices, and enhancement of employment and social
opportunities
