PRESS RELEASE
LAMATA strengthens LASTMA with patrol vans for BRT Monitoring
The Lagos State Government signaled its hardest warning yet with the introduction of five additional patrol vehicles by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) for use by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to combat flagrant abuse of the BRT lanes by unauthorized motorists.
Managing Director of LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, who handed keys to the vehicles to Special Adviser, Transportation to Lagos State Governor, Comrade Kayode Opeifa, said the donation underscored the seriousness the state government attaches to the operations of the BRT system without any interference from other vehicles not designated to be on the BRT lanes.
“Today, we start a campaign which is intended to drum the message home that the BRT lanes are inviolable. The BRT is governed by a set of regulations passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly and signed into law by the Governor. So it is part of the Laws of Lagos State. It must be respected by all irrespective of your position in the society,” Dr. Mobereola said. |

The regulations restrict the use of the BRT only to franchised operators and forbid their use by ambulances and fire service vehicles on emergency services, other mechanically propelled vehicles or carts. The use of the main carriageway by the informal danfo buses in contravention of BRT regulations has also been an issue of concern lately.
He said the state government was desirous of increasing the enforcement of the BRT regulations, hence the need to empower LASTMA with the patrol vehicles saying LAMATA as the regulator of the BRT system would do all it could to ensure that the system is no longer abused.
Dr. Mobereola said that the desire of Governor Raji Fashola is to see the BRT operate without any interference from other motorists.
He reminded that contravention of the regulations attract on conviction a fine of N25,000.00 or one month imprisonment or both.
While receiving the patrol vans, Comrade Opeifa thanked LAMATA for the donation and reiterated the resolve of LASTMA to ensure interference-free BRT operations.
He promised that the vehicles would be used for the purpose they were donated while calling on other public and private sector agencies to emulate LAMATA and assist LASTMA in carrying out its function of traffic management and free Lagos roads of congestion.
