The prestigious award was made by the Transport Planning Society in the United Kingdom and is given to transport planners who have made an exceptional contribution to transport planning profession over the last year. It was presented by Victoria Hills, the Chairperson of the Transport Planning Society in the United Kingdom, who said the “Lagos BRT represents a significant achievement for British transport planning expertise”.

The award which was jointly presented to Dr. Mobereola and Colin Brader, Managing Director of Integrated Transport Planners (ITP), who, in 2007 led a World Bank-funded feasibility study for the BRT system in Lagos, the first of its kind in Africa.

The scheme, which included regulatory reform, institutional restructuring and training, infrastructure development, bus purchase, branding and marketing, was delivered just 15 months after conception, and began operation on 17 March 2008. At the end of June 2009, the system had moved 74,359,114
passengers.

“It is now evident from our recent experience in Lagos that we are in a position to provide a transport system which allows the people of Lagos to travel with ease, within a specified time and at a reasonable cost,” he stated while responding after receiving the award.

Dr. Mobereola stated that the implementation of the Lagos BRT represented “best practice in transport planning and provided a focus for dialogue between those for who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the project.”

He said Lagos with a population of 18 million, seven million of which commute on a daily basis, provided the best example for transport implementers on how best consultant and client could work together to provide transport infrastructure.

On his part Mr. Brader described the award as the highest acknowledgement one could get as a professional, adding “my real award is seeing many faces using the BRT.”
