PRESS RELEASE

Use BRT lane, go to jail – Fashola warns

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) Sunday warned that fines may no longer be an option for those caught using the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes.

The warning followed flagrant abuse of the BRT lanes by vehicles other than BRT buses.

Violators have before now been made to pay a fine of N25,000 but Governor Fashola said the option of fine may be removed “so that we can drum the message home that we mean business.”

Speaking at the presentation of uniforms to about 1200 BRT bus pilots, officers and inspectors, Governor Fashola said “we have noticed that when people are fined, they pay but we will soon remove the option of fine and send violator of the BRT lanes straight to jail.

He added: “I continue to tell Lagosians that the BRT lane is no respecter of anybody, whoever you may be. We have started in the ordinary way. Those of you, who have cars, leave the BRT lanes for the poor.

“We are in a democracy. Democracy is about choices we make. In this case, there is a regulation guiding the operations of the BRT. Anybody who violates BRT lanes has abused democracy and we would allow the law to take its full course.”

He admonished car owners who would want to use the BRT lanes to drop their cars and ride in the BRT buses to enjoy the comfort and reliability the BRT offers.
The Governor however regretted that the agreement the BRT operatives, particularly the bus pilots had with him on July 20, 2008 when he promised them the uniforms, was being violated.
“I hear reports of over speeding. Citizens of Lagos State must leave home to take the BRT and when they do they must be save. When you are behind the steering, the lives of Lagosians are in your hands,” he stated.

He enjoined them to “as pioneer of a great thing” to take their business serious. “It is your livelihood, you must protect it. You must be civil to your commuters.”

Governor Fashola announced that he was recruiting his own monitors who would give daily report on the performance of the system generally and admonished them to put up good behaviour to ensure good service delivery.

The Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the provision of uniforms to the BRT operatives would further enhance service delivery level of the system.

He commended Governor Fashola’s commitment to the BRT describing him as a unique Governor who is committed to moving the state forward.
