He added: “I continue to tell Lagosians that the BRT lane is no respecter of anybody, whoever you may be. We have started in the ordinary way. Those of you, who have cars, leave the BRT lanes for the poor.
“We are in a democracy. Democracy is about choices we make. In this case, there is a regulation guiding the operations of the BRT. Anybody who violates BRT lanes has abused democracy and we would allow the law to take its full course.”
He admonished car owners who would want to use the BRT lanes to drop their cars and ride in the BRT buses to enjoy the comfort and reliability the BRT offers.
The Governor however regretted that the agreement the BRT operatives, particularly the bus pilots had with him on July 20, 2008 when he promised them the uniforms, was being violated.
“I hear reports of over speeding. Citizens of Lagos State must leave home to take the BRT and when they do they must be save. When you are behind the steering, the lives of Lagosians are in your hands,” he stated.
He enjoined them to “as pioneer of a great thing” to take their business serious. “It is your livelihood, you must protect it. You must be civil to your commuters.”
Governor Fashola announced that he was recruiting his own monitors who would give daily report on the performance of the system generally and admonished them to put up good behaviour to ensure good service delivery.
The Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the provision of uniforms to the BRT operatives would further enhance service delivery level of the system.
He commended Governor Fashola’s commitment to the BRT describing him as a unique Governor who is committed to moving the state forward.
