GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM

Geographic Information System (GIS) is an indispensable planning analysis tool. GIS enables managers to have information about the characteristics of a particular area, the infrastructure provided, how they have been deployed, where there is lack among other things.

In LAMATA, the transport planning regulatory agency of the Lagos State Government, GIS has been used to capture the transportation infrastructure.

TRANSPORTATION GIS

The Transportation Infrastructure is one of the most important geographic features of an area and GIS for Transportation is the solution to various problems associated with this Infrastructure as it relates to urban development.

GIS has been successful in the development and implementation of the following applications in the field of transportation:

Route Planning and Analysis
Bus Dispatch and Emergency Response
Automatic Vehicle Location and Tracking
Para-transit Scheduling and Routing
Bus Stop and Facility Inventory
Rail System Facility Management
Accident Reporting and Analysis
Demographic Analysis and Route Restructuring
Transportation Planning and Modeling
Railroads
Transportation Planning and Travel Demand Modeling
Vehicle Routing and Logistics

GIS also assists Transportation Authorities and Professionals in the following areas:

Transportation Planning

Transportation GIS supports transportation decision-makers as they manage the comprehensive transportation planning process. This process considers many factors, including the environment, land use, development, safety, and security. A transportation agency with Transportation GIS capabilities at its disposal provides its stakeholders with assistance on economic development, rural and metropolitan transportation planning, and professional capacity building. GIS assists transportation planners in identifying areas that are underserved by transportation infrastructure, pinpointing appropriate sites for the placement of a roadway or public transit facility, and matching transportation services with demographic and environmental features.

An interesting feature of transportation GIS projects is that many diverse data sets related to the areas served by the transportation infrastructure are also important. The different features found in these areas, such as homes, schools, hospitals, shopping areas, etc. can also shape the transportation infrastructure. It is not solely dependent on the roads, rails, air travel patterns or waterways within the project area. The potential changes in the demographics and land use elements must also be taken into account.

Natural and Human Environment

A transportation agency in possession of full Transportation GIS capabilities is responsible for safeguarding valuable natural resources as part of the process of citing and developing transportation services, overseeing air, water, and noise quality, as well as protecting fragile ecosystems and developing context-sensitive transportation facilities. The agency will also support the development of alternative transportation facilities, including facilities aimed at pedestrians and cyclists. GIS is invaluable for the management of natural resources, allowing for important environmental assets to be easily identified and cataloged. These technologies also provide an effective means for identifying and minimizing potential conflicts with the natural and human environments.

Ultimately, Transportation GIS contributes in the achievement of a sustainable Transportation System despite increasing population and travel demands.

LAMATA GIS

LAMATA GIS consists of Raster and Vector Data and Metropolitan Lagos is the extent of coverage.

Vector Data Include:

  • Lagos State Road Network - Federal and State Highways totaling about 860 kilometers – (Attributes: - Road Names, Road Classification, Length, Ownership, Local Govt. Area, e.t.c.)
  • Railway Lines
  • Lagos State Facilities e.g. Markets, Schools, Hospitals, Bus Stops, Petrol Stations, Hotels, Churches, Mosques, e.t.c.
  • Lagos State Water Bodies (Canals, Lagoons) and the Coast Line.
  • Lagos State Land Use
  • Lagos State Jetties & Landings (Functional, Non-functional)

Raster Data:

  • Satellite Imagery - Digital Globe QuickBird and SpaceImaging IKONOS Satellite Imagery with a spatial resolution of about 0.7 metre and 1 metre respectively.
